New PRIVATE VT SCHEME for UK Dentistry
Vocational Training was developed in the 1980s as the ideal introduction for new dental graduates entering general dental practice in the UK. However, with the current scheme entirely focussed on NHS dentistry the increasingly important role of private practice has not been addressed by those planning VT, until now at least.
The effect of this NHS bias is that some of the best qualified mentors, working in some of the best practices in the UK, have effectively been excluded from the system, while new graduates are denied experience in the one area of UK dentistry that is growing, thriving and providing arguably the most ethical standards of care.
Interested in becoming a Private VT Mentor? Can you answer YES to the questions below:
-
You are developing a practice that delivers great customer service and great dentistry in a caring environment.
-
Your practice is growing and you know you will need more dentists in the future to help deal with the increasing demand you are likely to see.
-
You enjoy dentistry and have reached a stage in your career where you would welcome the opportunity to pass on the benefits of your knowledge and experience to a new graduate.
-
You want to be part of a bold new scheme that starts to reverse the decline of UK dentistry, where new graduates will be taught by people who share your values and optimism about the future, focussing on quality, value, professionalism and customer service.

Becoming a PVT Mentor, will be a straightforward process, usually involving a practice visit and informal interview.
-
If your application is successful it will be your responsibility to choose your trainee. Your practice and personal statement will be available for final year students to view on our website. You will also be able to freely advertise the position at your practice however you like, compile a shortlist, decide whom to interview and ultimately it will be entirely YOUR choice who becomes your FD1 dentist. It’s your practice so why should it be any other way? Not only that, but once your trainee is established in the practice, with a growing patient list, we won’t ask you to replace them with another trainee as so often happens in the NHS VT scheme, avoiding potentially damaging effects on continuity of patient care and goodwill.
